Anthropocene

[NL] Het Antropoceen-project.

[EN] The Anthropocene Project. Within this ongoing ecological project, I respond to the era in which human influence on the Earth is tangibly present everywhere. The project originated organically from my daily walks through nearby forests and rural areas. During these journeys, I encounter human waste, particularly agricultural plastic (silage wrap). My first reaction is aversion; the destructive presence of this refuse in nature is horrific. At the same time, I do not pick up these weathered fragments for nothing: I am mesmerized by the exceptional beauty found within the transparency, color, and the often soil-blended plastic.

Captivated by wonder at these conflicting emotions, I collect the remnants. In my studio, I examine the material as well as my own fascination: why am I so moved by these small objects? Stemming from these questions, I seek to filter the 'horrific beauty' from the material. I photograph the objects as material sketches, which I display as photographic prints on lightboxes. The viewer's reaction is often one of disbelief regarding the mystical appearance of the illuminated plastic. They experience within it — just as I do — the immense contradiction. Is this perhaps the right emotion through which the relationship between humanity and nature can be critically questioned?
